The Benefits of a Zig-Zag Career
Why breadth, not just depth, creates leverage.
I’ve worn a few different hats in my career: co-founder and CEO, Divisional CFO, Head of Operations, investor, and a handful of other strategic roles in between.
To some, it may look like a zig-zag. I get it. In practice, however, it’s been compounding.
From finance, I learned attention to detail and quantitative skills.
From strategy, I gained clarity of thought and the ability to cut through the noise.
From operations, I practiced building clear, scalable solutions.
Working across these three disciplines taught me that the whole really is greater than the sum of the parts, at least when it comes to scaling.
If there’s one lesson I’d share, it’s to deliberately look outside your swim lane. Deep expertise is important, but pairing it with breadth gives you leverage you can’t get from depth alone.
And sometimes, the biggest unlocks come from skills that don’t normally sit side by side.
That approach has shaped my pov so far and continues to inform how I tackle new challenges.
